Proton Pump Inhibitors

Proton pump inhibitors, also known as PPIs, are linked to risk of osteoporosis. Proton pump inhibitors are available both by prescription and in over-the-counter preparations. Common brand names include Nexium®, Prevacid®, Prilosec®, Protonix®, and Zegerid®.

The exact mechanism is not known but may be due to decreased stomach acid that is necessary for calcium absorption. Fracture risk increases with use of proton pump inhibitors for 5 to 7 years.

If you are using proton pump inhibitors, try lowering your dose and discontinuing your medicine. If you still require medicine to decrease stomach acid, try a non-PPI medicine to control your symptoms.
